Mariela Alfonzo, Ph.D., MURP

Dr. Alfonzo is currently a Post Doctoral Fellow at the Metropolitan Institute at Virginia Tech, in Alexandria, VA, in the
Department of Urban Affairs and Planning. She has a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning with an emphasis on Urban
Design and Behavior, as well as a professional Masters in Urban Planning, from UCI and a Bachelor of Arts in
Psychology and Architecture from the University of Miami.

Dr. Alfonzo has presented her work at a variety of professional and academic conferences and workshops, including
the Urban Land Institute (ULI), the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), the Environmental Design
Research Association (EDRA), and the International Downtown Association. Her articles have appeared in publications
such as Urban Land, Planning, the Journal of Urban Design, and the Journal of the American Planning Association. She
has produced reports for agencies such as HUD, the California State Legislature, and the Transportation Research
Board. Additionally, Dr. Alfonzo has taught several Urban Design courses at Virginia Tech and the University of California,
Irvine (UCI). She served as the Chair of University Outreach for the Young Leaders Group of ULI Orange County for two
years; has participated in several ULI Technical Advisory Panels; and is currently the web content manager for EDRA.
